Abstract
Despite its vast economic potential, Iran’s sports industry remains dependent on traditional sources of income-such as ticket sales and state sponsorships-and fails to capitalize on its intangible assets, including trademarks, image rights, and industrial designs. The purpose of this study is to design an intellectual property (IP based revenue model for Iranian sports clubs, with a focus on football. Adopting a descriptive-analytical and comparative methodology, the research first extracted key IP concepts from credible international sources and national studies (including the Sports IP Protection Model and reports by the Iranian Parliamentary Research Center). It then analyzed Iran’s current situation and, through a comparative study of successful global models, proposed a five-step framework. According to the Parliamentary Research Center, “the persistent weakness in enforcing intellectual property laws is the main reason clubs are deprived of commercial sales.” The national IP protection model identifies nine major categories for sports-related IP protection in Iran. Although more than 10,000 trademarks have been registered in Iran’s sports sector, the numbers of inventions and industrial designs remain negligible. The proposed model consists of five steps: 1- Comprehensive audit of IP assets; 2- Trademark registration in relevant classes; 3- Image-rights agreements with players; 4- Licensing contracts with manufacturers; 5- Monitoring implementation, combating counterfeits, and ambush marketing. Implementation of this framework can generate sustainable income for Iranian clubs and contribute to the industrial development of sports as a key outcome of IP protection. It is recommended that the Ministry of Sport, the Football Federation, and the Intellectual Property Center of the Organization for Registration of Deeds and Properties facilitate realization of this model through revising standard club contracts, educating managers, and establishing effective monitoring mechanisms.
